Client: East Kilbride shopping centre
EK's indoor beach gives local meerkats a taste of summer
When EK East Kilbride closed the doors on its hugely popular indoor beach at the end of the summer holidays, managers at the shopping centre found themselves with a dilemma. What do you do with five tonnes of top grade sand?
The easy option would be to dump the lot, but with a reputation as an environmentally friendly centre to uphold, efforts were made to find a new home for the beach.
The thinking caps went on and before long the light bulb moment arrived. Let’s see if the meerkats at EK’s Calderglen Country Park would like a home makeover.
When the delivery took place the PR team commissioned top photographer, Chris James, to risk life and limb – well a couple of inquisitive looks – to secure the ideal photo within the meerkat den.
The story of the donation along with pictures of the meerkats with one year old Elliot James and EK customer relations manager, Julie Hodgkinson, were then communicated across multiple social media channels and through the pages of local and regional press.
From a communications perspective the solution ticked all the right boxes. It provided an opportunity to reinforce the centre’s green credentials and tied in perfectly to the centre’s Helping Hands community programme.
And most importantly, it also gave EK’s meerkats a chance to chill out on their new beach!
